KAMPALA, Dec. 18 (Xinhua) -- At least 19 people were killed on spot and six others injured in a road accident on Tuesday in the eastern Ugandan district of Kapchorwa, a police spokesperson said.
Emilian Kayima, Uganda's police spokesperson, told Xinhua by telephone that the fatal accident occurred after a bus lost control, overturned and fell off a cliff at Towei corner along the Kapchorwa-Mbale Highway.
The deceased and injured who travelled from the mid-western districts of Masindi and Kiryandongo were returning from a three-day trip in Kapchorwa.
Police said the cause of the accident is not known.
The bodies of the deceased and injured have been taken to Kapchorwa and Mbale hospitals for postmortem and treatment respectively.
Uganda registers about 20,000 accidents each year, with some 2,000 deaths, making it one of the countries with the highest road traffic death rates, according to police statistics. Enditem
